Comparative Politics in Borderlands: Actors, Identities, and Strategies

Comparativists are increasingly researching national border regions. Yet the distinct way in which proximity to borders independently shapes politics is rarely theorized explicitly. Drawing on emerging subdiscipline of studies, we identify three types effects: Borders involve specific actors, shape local identities, and provide strategies, each directly affects key areas comparative politics. An in-depth review work political violence state formation shows that specifying these effects ( a) demands comparativists consider ways borderlands differ from other regions be careful attributing processes found there nations as a whole, b) improves theories by elucidating scope conditions, c) scrutinizes validity our research designs measurement strategies.
